Pet ID and The Microchip Advisory Group

Pet ID and The Microchip Advisory Group

Pet ID is a founder member of The Microchip Advisory Group (MAG)

MAG brings together microchip manufacturers and distributors, the veterinary profession, animal welfare organisations, dog control services and database administrators.

MAG has drawn up a code of practice for microchip manufacturers and distributors that gives guidelines for industry practice in areas such as standardised performance tests and the development of microchips with advanced functions.

The aims of the Microchip Advisory Group

MAG is concerned only with the microchip identification of non-food producing animals i.e. companion animals and horses not intended for human consumption.

MAG aims to:

  • Provide an interface between microchip distributors, users and related organisations
  • Develop and promote a code of practice for the industry
  • Promote best practice in the management of implanted animal databases
  • Co-ordinate and publish a list and analysis of adverse reaction to injected microchips
  • Provide an interface with the ISO group developing advanced microchips and performance / conformance tests for microchips and scanners
  • Promote the easy repatriation of lost microchipped companion animals through 24 hr access to integrated telephone and internet systems
  • Promote safe microchip techniques and effective scanning through training

On 23 February 2006, Pet ID was the first company to sign The Microchip Advisory Group’s Code of Practice.

It is also worth noting that the latest Microchip Report recommends that the registration of owner’s and animal’s details are offered as part of the microchipping service.  Implanters are encouraged to post registration details themselves and not leave this important task to their client.  For this reason, Pet ID supply pre-addressed, pre-paid envelopes free of charge as part of their microchip package.  On-line registration is also available from Petlog.
