Important Information
An owner must sign Section IX in the Horse Passport and return it to Pet ID Equine for countersigning with the administration fee of £9.00, before the equine is transported permanently outside the United Kingdom. Equine owners who live in Wales must sign Section IX in the passport immediately upon receipt, but it does not need to be returned to Pet ID Equine for a countersignature.
As from 28th February 2005, the law requires that no persons may sell, move or compete an equine without a Horse Passport. The passport should be available for inspection by the appropriate authorities responsible for enforcing the statutory regulations.
The section 'Medicinal Treatment' at the back of the Horse Passport contains declarations concerning whether the animal is intended for slaughter for human consumption. This section may be signed at any time, but must be signed when directed by a vet before administering certain medicines or before an animal is consigned for slaughter or human consumption. Please note that if Part 2 (Not for human consumption) is signed, this declaration cannot be revoked by subsequent owners of the equine.
If an equine is microchipped and/or freeze marked after its passport has been issued, the chip number or freeze mark should be written in the spaces at the top of the identification page at the centre of the passport. The following details need to be sent to Pet ID Equine: the equine's name and the Unique Equine Lifetime Number (UELN) from the front page of the passport, and details of the microchip or freeze mark. We will update our records accordingly.
Once Pet ID Equine is in receipt of the passport application, the equine owner does not have the right to cancel the request due to the uniqueness of the document. Therefore, the payment will be retained by Pet ID Equine to cover the cost of processing and issuing the application, even if the document is no longer required.

Please ensure the correct postage is used on any postal correspondence. A 1st Class Stamp is likely to be inadequate due to weight.

Horse Passports and microchips – regulation changes
As the Horse Passport Regulations changed from 1st July 2009, please read the following guidance notes:
An approved Passport Issuing Office (PIO) cannot issue a Horse Passport after 1st July 2009 if the equine has not been microchipped. Once the equine has been microchipped, the implant site will need to be marked on the silhouette with an ‘
’, however the silhouette no longer needs to be completed in full, (just the shaded areas). Please note, some breed societies may still ask for a fully completed silhouette. You will also need to ensure that the microchip number is recorded on the application form and silhouette.

Foals
A foal must be identified by six months of age or by 31st December of the year of its birth. If a foal is not identified within this time, Part II of Section IX will be signed by the PIO in order to exclude the equine from the human food chain.
An unweaned foal will require a passport regardless of its age if it is being moved without its Dam or foster mother, or sent for slaughter for human consumption.
Adult Equines
All passport applications made for adult equines who have not been previously identified will automatically be signed out of the food chain by the PIO, as it is unlikely that accurate medicinal records exist.
